Hi, I am the Youth Education Support Worker for Hines Creek Composite, Worsley Central School, and Menno Simons Community School. I am originally from Halifax, Nova Scotia and have been working for PRSD since March 2015.
YES Workers help teachers teach students skills for good mental health. We spend most of our time working with big groups (like a full class of students and the teacher). This way, everyone learns and lots of problems are avoided because students know how to handle life’s tough stuff before it happens. Teachers spend the most time with the students. That’s why it’s so important that teachers are our partners so they can remind students to use the mental health skills they learn.
YES Workers help students connect to adults. Students do best when they have lots of adults supporting them! YES Workers help students to identify the adults they can turn to, find additional adults who can support them, and facilitate new connections. YES Workers also work with adults so they have great skills to support the students they know.
YES Workers help and encourage students, families, school staff, community and businesses to work together and build up skills so everyone can enjoy good mental health.
In my schools, students are supported in Health and CALM classes through programs like the Second Step, Red Cross Healthy Youth Relationships, the Fourth R, Mind Up, and Stress Lessons. Small groups like Spectrum (Rainbows) - Grief and Loss, Girls Group, Friendship Club, and Boys Club are offered to support students with a variety of social-emotional goals and learning. School wide universal programming is also offered including the Student Wellness Action Team and the celebration of events like Pink Shirt Day and Mental Health Awareness Week.
